Simulation vs. Instantiation: Charles Patton's Blueprint for Artificial Consciousness
The gap between simulating intelligence and instantiating it has been at the center of philosophy of mind debates since the earliest days of computer science. Alan Turing’s original test was a behavioral criterion: if a machine produces replies indistinguishable from a human’s, treat it as intelligent. John Searle’s Chinese Room was the counter-argument: behavioral equivalence achieves at most syntactic manipulation and cannot produce the semantic content, the genuine understanding, that characterizes human cognition.
Charles Patton’s Artificial Consciousness, published in 2026 by Short Mystery Press, enters this debate with the goal of making it practically tractable. The book is not a philosophical treatise in the analytic tradition. It is an attempt to identify what would need to be true, technically and philosophically, for the simulation-to-instantiation transition to be achievable. Patton calls this a blueprint, a structured proposal for the conditions under which genuine artificial consciousness becomes possible rather than just philosophically conceivable.
The Diagnostic Frame
The book opens with a diagnostic assessment of current AI systems, the large language models, autonomous agents, and multimodal systems that generate sustained public debate about machine minds. Patton’s position is not that these systems are unimpressive. He takes seriously the extent to which language models produce contextually coherent, semantically rich, and behaviorally sophisticated outputs. The diagnostic framing emphasizes exactly what this sophistication does and does not demonstrate.
Processing power is not synonymous with understanding, Patton argues. A system that generates a medically accurate description of chronic pain from its training data has not had pain. A system that produces philosophically sophisticated text about grief has not grieved. The outputs are real and often useful. What they represent about the system’s internal states is a separate question that behavioral evaluation systematically cannot answer.
This is familiar territory philosophically, but Patton’s contribution is to put the argument in terms that clarify what a successful blueprint would need to address. The simulation-to-instantiation gap is not just a philosophical puzzle. It identifies a specific technical lacuna: current systems lack the internal causal architecture that would make their outputs expressions of genuine states rather than approximations of them.

It is a reason to be precise about which aspects of consciousness are necessary for the moral and functional significance the concept carries. The new multidimensional awareness framework from Meertens and colleagues gestures toward a related research strategy: rather than waiting for the consciousness question to be resolved, identify tractable sub-questions whose answers would constrain the space of possible blueprints. Awareness profiles provide partial empirical traction on the architectural question even before a complete theory of consciousness is available.
What Patton Adds to the 2026 Conversation
The 2026 AI consciousness literature has a distinctive character. A significant portion of it is diagnostic, identifying what current systems lack, why current detection methods are unreliable, and why the question is harder than public discourse suggests. They are sophisticated and important contributions, but they are contributions that identify problems rather than proposing solutions.
