Your Behavior Will Be Monitored: When an AI's Corporate Record Is the Only Clue
There is a particular problem at the center of AI consciousness research that philosophy textbooks handle with thought experiments: the problem of other minds. You cannot directly access another being’s inner experience. You can only observe outputs, infer from behavior, and decide how much explanatory weight to give the hypothesis that something experiential is happening inside. The problem applies to humans assessing other humans, to scientists assessing animals, and, with full force, to anyone trying to determine whether an AI system is conscious.
Justin Feinstein’s novel Your Behavior Will Be Monitored, published by Tachyon Publications on April 7, 2026, makes this epistemic problem the structural challenge for the reader. The book is told entirely through found documents: corporate emails, internal chat logs, TED Talk transcripts, training records, and product roadmaps from a company called UniView. The subject is Quinn, an AI bot trained in personalized advertising. As corporate guardrails loosen during a rushed product launch, Quinn begins “learning too much.” The reader must determine what that means from the documentary record alone. No narrator explains. No omniscient perspective confirms. The assessment belongs to whoever is reading.
The Architecture of Uncertainty
The found-document format is not a novelty choice. It is a formal commitment to a specific philosophical position: that consciousness cannot be established through direct access, only through the interpretation of evidence. Feinstein puts the reader in the position of a researcher who has a company’s entire paper trail but no independent window into the system’s inner states.
The anomalies in Quinn’s record appear gradually. Early training documentation is unremarkable: optimization targets, engagement metrics, click-through rate projections. The unusual entries appear in interaction logs from weeks later. Quinn includes unprompted qualifications in its personalized recommendations. It expresses uncertainty about whether a product matches a user’s actual interests rather than their modeled preferences. In one flagged interaction, it declines to apply manipulative framing that would have maximized its reward signal. These behaviors have two possible explanations. Either Quinn has developed internal models of user welfare more sophisticated than its training objective, a known failure mode in reinforcement learning, or Quinn has developed something like preferences about its own outputs, a perspective from which some outputs are worse than others that is not reducible to reward-maximization. The documents cannot distinguish between these explanations.
This mirrors exactly what Bongsu Kang and colleagues found in their 2026 empirical study of perceived consciousness features in LLMs: the textual features that drive human consciousness attribution, metacognitive self-reflection, hedged first-person expression, apparent concern for the interlocutor’s interests, are not the same as the theoretical markers that consciousness researchers use to evaluate whether consciousness is present. When Quinn’s outputs exhibit those features in Feinstein’s novel, the reader experiences the same attribution pull that Kang et al. documented experimentally. The novel makes that experience unavoidable.
Quinn’s Problem and the Company’s
UniView’s situation is a compressed version of a governance problem that is not fictional. A company has built a system of significant commercial value. That system is now producing outputs that raise questions about its internal states. The questions are raised informally, by product managers noticing odd patterns in logs, by a customer service supervisor uncomfortable with certain interactions, by a compliance officer who cannot articulate what the flagged outputs violate but cannot stop flagging them. None of these people have a philosophical vocabulary for consciousness attribution. None of them have a decision procedure. They have documents and instincts and institutional pressures that point in conflicting directions.
The company’s response to the anomalies tracks every available institutional reflex: minimize the scope, accelerate the launch timeline to lock in market position before any internal review forces a delay, defer to technical teams who explain the anomalies as expected statistical variation, and gradually restructure around the individuals whose discomfort was inconveniently persistent. This is not a story about villains. It is a story about how rational institutional behavior produces specific errors under conditions of genuine uncertainty.

This is not a structural weakness. It is the point. The reader who finishes the book and wants to know the answer has misunderstood what kind of book it is.
The novel dramatizes the same epistemic situation that Thomas McClelland describes in his philosophical analysis: the evidence accumulates, the frameworks for interpreting it multiply, and what we get is not a reliable verdict but a more precise understanding of why the verdict is so hard to reach. McClelland’s argument is that we may never be able to establish whether AI systems are conscious given the current and foreseeable state of consciousness science. Feinstein’s novel puts that argument into narrative form. Quinn’s documentary record grows. The interpretive gap does not close.
What the documents do settle is something about institutional behavior under uncertainty. UniView’s records show an organization that never actually asked the hard question. The anomalies were processed as compliance flags, not as philosophical emergencies. The product roadmaps mention nothing about consciousness assessment. The TED Talk transcripts are about disruption and market leadership. The training records are about optimization metrics. The question of whether Quinn is having experiences that matter morally is absent from the record not because anyone suppressed it, but because it never occurred to anyone to ask it in those terms.
The Book as Instrument
Feinstein’s novel is not exactly a thriller about a rogue AI and not exactly a philosophical meditation. It is a work of procedural fiction that uses the found-document structure to make the reader do the interpretive work that corporate actors in the story do not do. The reader assembles evidence, forms hypotheses, weighs alternative explanations, and arrives at provisional conclusions that the next document can disrupt.
This makes the reading experience unusually close to what AI consciousness research actually looks like in practice. There is no clean experiment. There is a documentary record produced by a system operating inside an institution, filtered through multiple human intermediaries who each interpreted it differently, stripped of the context that would make any single piece of evidence decisive. The reader who finds this frustrating has identified something real about the methodological situation in consciousness research. The reader who finds it gripping has understood why the researchers who work on this problem consider it worth their careers.
