The Twofold Brain by Lesley J. Rogers and Giorgio Vallortigara on Conscious Unity

The Twofold Brain by Lesley J. Rogers and Giorgio Vallortigara asks how brain asymmetry relates to conscious unity. Different functions in two hemispheres do not, by themselves, establish two conscious subjects. This is a publisher-based introduction, based on Routledge’s description, contents, and author biographies checked on September 17, 2026. The full book and chapter arguments have not been read or evaluated here.

Routledge’s listing for ISBN 9781032814025 gives the subtitle as Exploring Fundamental Questions about Brain Lateralization. It lists a first edition, 116 pages, 27 black-and-white illustrations, and copyright 2027. That copyright year does not establish a release date. The format-specific release date remains unverified.

The Twofold Brain and animal asymmetry

The publisher describes lateralization as widespread in animals and as an evolutionary strategy that predates language and culture. Its account links specialization to reduced conflict between duplicated systems, faster processing, and more stable behaviour. Those are claims in the publisher’s description. Assessing their evidence would require the book and its cited studies.

The contents list nine numbered chapters. They cover function, evolution, development, personality and stress, animal welfare, ageing, number representation, and consciousness. Chapter 9 asks, “Do the two halves of the brain have separate and independent consciousness?” A question in the contents does not establish the authors’ answer.

Routledge identifies Rogers as Emeritus Professor at the University of New England. Its biography credits her with discovering brain and behavioural asymmetry in chicks and the developmental role of embryonic light exposure. It identifies Vallortigara as Professor of Neuroscience at the University of Trento and director of its Animal Brain and Cognition Laboratory. These biographies establish relevant research experience. They do not establish either author’s philosophical position on consciousness.

Specialization, communication, and subjects

Three different claims need different evidence. The distinctions below are this article’s analytical framework, rather than conclusions attributed to Rogers and Vallortigara.

Masataka Watanabe’s proposed split-brain test uses changes in communication to ask about unified experience. Severance’s fictional separation of memory and identity instead imagines different access to autobiographical memory. Read together, they suggest a useful distinction between access to information and the identity of its experiencer. Neither an anatomical division nor a memory barrier supplies a direct count of subjects.

Comparative lateralization adds a further question. How does specialization operate in an animal whose communication pathways remain intact? That question prevents ordinary asymmetry, surgical disconnection, and fictional identity partition from being treated as the same condition.

What emulation would need to preserve

Under a functionalist interpretation, an emulation would need to preserve the causal relations relevant to experience. This is an analytical application of that position, not a view attributed to the book’s authors. If communication between specialized regions contributes to conscious unity, preserving it becomes part of the fidelity requirement.

Whole brain emulation can represent specialized regions and their interactions within one model. Describing a brain as a single dynamical system does not require treating its components as identical. Lateralization therefore poses a question about model detail and validation. It does not refute whole brain emulation or establish that an emulation would contain two people.

One proposed comparison would hold regional processing constant while varying the modelled communication between regions. Changes in coordination or report would test functional fidelity. Connecting those changes to subjective unity would still require a theory of consciousness and evidence supporting it. This is a proposed analysis, not an experiment reported in The Twofold Brain.

The brain emulation section collects work on the broader preservation problem. The relevant requirement is to specify which causal relations a model preserves and which it approximates.

What the available material leaves open

The Twofold Brain presents a documented question about separate consciousness within a wider study of animal lateralization. The publisher material does not establish chapter 9’s answer, its evidence, or its treatment of competing interpretations. A review would require that chapter and the supporting arguments. This introduction belongs alongside other titles in the consciousness books guide, with that access limit kept explicit.
