Herve Zwirn Convivial Solipsism. Wigner's Friend Contradictions Are Perspective Errors

Herve Zwirn’s paper “Misunderstanding Convivial Solipsism. The Necessity of a Perspectival Logic” (arXiv:2608.26361, v2 August 30, 2026) answers a family of objections to his quantum interpretation and, in doing so, states plainly what the interpretation claims about consciousness. Convivial Solipsism holds that observational facts are not absolute. They are indexed to perspectives. The statement “the friend saw outcome A” is incomplete inside the framework. It must be reformulated as “from the friend’s perspective, the friend saw outcome A” or “from Wigner’s perspective, the friend reported outcome B.” Zwirn’s central claim is that the standard objections to this view, especially those built on Wigner’s friend and extended Wigner’s friend scenarios, look powerful only because they smuggle classical, non-perspectival assumptions back into a framework built to reject them.

The paper matters for consciousness research because the observer’s experience is load-bearing in it. What a measurement means, for whom the outcome exists, and how one observer can ever know another’s result are questions about the connection between measurement and experience. Zwirn answers them with a discipline of perspectival discourse rather than with a physical theory of experience.

What Convivial Solipsism Actually Claims

The name misleads. Convivial Solipsism is not a retreat into psychological solipsism, the claim that only one’s own mind exists. It preserves the universality of quantum mechanics and denies exactly one thing, the absoluteness of observed events. Each observer’s measurement outcomes are absolute for that observer. They are not facts in a single global factual domain shared by all observers.

The framework inherits from what Zwirn calls the necessity of a perspectival logic. When facts are indexed to perspectives, the logic governing statements about them changes. A statement without its perspective index is not a complete factual statement, and combining two complete perspectival statements can yield an apparent contradiction only when the indices are stripped off. Zwirn argues perspectival logic stands to classical logic as quantum probability stands to Kolmogorovian probability theory. The rules are not a restriction on reasoning. They are the correct reasoning for a domain where the classical assumptions fail.

The Friend Saw A, From Where

Wigner’s friend sets the trap. The friend measures a quantum system inside a sealed lab and sees a definite outcome. Wigner, outside, describes the whole lab as evolving into a superposition. Standard treatments generate a contradiction by letting both descriptions be absolute facts. Extended Wigner’s friend scenarios push the structure further and claim to derive impossibility results for observer-independent facts.

Zwirn’s dissolution is index discipline. “The friend saw outcome A” without an index is the mistake. Within the framework, the friend’s outcome is absolute from the friend’s perspective. Wigner’s superposition is correct from Wigner’s perspective. The friend’s report, as available to Wigner, is that the friend reported outcome B, again indexed. No statement in the framework is ever both “the friend saw A” and “the friend saw not-A” in one factual domain. The contradiction exists only in the stripped formulation that the framework forbids.

The same discipline handles the standard follow-ups. Communication between observers works because reports, as received, are perspectival facts about the reporting observer. Other minds are not denied. What is denied is that another observer’s outcomes are absolute in your factual domain, a position Zwirn’s earlier work argues is already implicit in the structure of quantum measurement.

Why This Bears on Consciousness

The interpretation takes the observer’s experience as the point where facthood is generated, which places consciousness at the centre of the measurement problem rather than at its edge. The consciousness connection runs through three claims.

First, the existence of a definite outcome is tied to the perspective of an experiencing observer. Zwirn’s framework does not reduce the observer to an ordinary physical subsystem, because ordinary physical subsystems have their states described absolutely by outside observers, and the whole point is that outcomes are not absolute that way.

Second, the framework gives the other-minds problem a specific quantum form. I cannot verify your outcome as a fact in my domain. I can only receive your report as a perspectival fact. The epistemic situation of one consciousness relative to another is built into the formalism.

Third, the false dilemmas the objections generate are consciousness dilemmas. Either consciousness collapses the wavefunction or it does not, either other observers have definite outcomes or they do not. Zwirn’s answer is that the dilemmas are artefacts of index stripping. That diagnosis is itself a contribution to how consciousness enters physical description, and it is one of the few on offer that does so without adding new physics.

Where It Sits in the Quantum Consciousness Field

The field covered on this site splits between physical theories that locate consciousness in quantum processes, such as the Orch-OR position Hameroff and Penrose defended at CS26 and the microtubule evidence work by Michael Wiest, and interpretational work where the observer’s perspective does the work. Convivial Solipsism belongs to the second group, closer in spirit to the dual-aspect monism Harald Atmanspacher presented at MoC7 than to microtubule physics. The quantum probability work on optimal evidence and confirmation bias is the nearest formal neighbour on this site, since both programmes deny that classical probability and classical logic are the right instruments for domains involving observers.

Comparison to The Consciousness AI

The Consciousness AI project (https://github.com/tlcdv/the_consciousness_ai) studies consciousness as an emergent property of organised dynamics, substrate independent, and its architecture measures candidate indicators in spiking substrates. Convivial Solipsism is not a source of indicators. Its relevance is positional. It models a system whose definite states are perspective indexed, which is a formal reminder that a third-person instrument, any instrument, records its readings from a perspective. That limit on measurement is one reason the project’s instruments report candidate indicators rather than detections, and it is stated here as a design constraint on what a measurement of consciousness can claim to be.

What Remains Open

The paper is a defence, and it says so. It reconstructs misunderstandings and states the discipline that removes them. It does not give an independent empirical test that would distinguish Convivial Solipsism from other no-absoluteness interpretations, and the identification of perspectival facthood with the experiencing observer remains a philosophical commitment rather than a derivation. Zwirn’s contribution is the conceptual hygiene. Any interpretation that takes non-absolute facts seriously must index observational statements to perspectives, and once it does, the apparent contradictions about consciousness, communication and other minds in Wigner’s friend scenarios stop being contradictions.
