Nikolai Fyodorov's Philosophy of the Common Task and Why Russian Cosmism Began With the Dead

Nikolai Fyodorov argued that humanity should settle other worlds because it would run out of room for the people it had brought back from the dead. That is the actual structure of the argument, and it is the reason Russian cosmism exists. The space programme is a consequence of a moral obligation rather than a plan for survival or resources.

Fyodorov lived from 1829 to 1903, worked as a teacher and then from 1878 as a librarian at the Rumyantsev Museum in Moscow, and published essentially nothing under his own name during his lifetime. He held that property in books and ideas was itself an error. His writing was collected and printed after his death as The Philosophy of the Common Task, which also circulates under the title The Philosophy of Physical Resurrection.

The argument, in the order Fyodorov gives it

The starting claim is that death is the one problem that makes every other problem provisional. From there the steps run in a fixed sequence.

Immortality for the living is not achievable on its own terms, because a living generation that secured its own survival while leaving its ancestors dead would have accepted the arrangement it claims to reject. Fyodorov treats that as incoherent rather than merely selfish.

The obligation is therefore to resurrect the dead, and to do it by physical means rather than by waiting for a supernatural event. He proposed that the particles of the dead are dispersed and recoverable, and that expeditions would go out into the cosmos to gather them.

Resurrection then produces its own constraint. Every generation that has ever lived, restored at once, does not fit on one planet. Settlement of other worlds follows as an engineering requirement of the moral programme.

Regulation of nature is the general name he gives to all of it. Weather, harvests, mortality and the arrangement of the solar system are one continuous task, and the division between what humans may alter and what they must accept is the thing he rejects.

Why this matters to a project about consciousness

Fyodorov’s mechanism has an unnoticed feature. Resurrection by gathering scattered particles is a reconstruction claim. It says a person is recoverable from the physical material that person was made of, given enough knowledge of how the material was arranged.

That is the same structure as the uploading question, arriving from the opposite direction. Both ask whether a person survives a procedure that takes them apart and puts an equivalent back together. Both need an account of what has to be preserved for the answer to be yes. Fyodorov assumed the particles were the thing to preserve. The contemporary version of the question asks whether the organisation is the thing to preserve and the particles are interchangeable, which is the position examined in why major consciousness theories do not require neural tissue.

The two answers pull apart immediately. If organisation is what matters, gathering the original atoms is unnecessary, and Fyodorov’s expeditions are looking for something that does not need to be found. If the specific matter is what matters, then substrate independence is false and nothing survives a change of substrate. Fyodorov did not have the vocabulary to state the choice, and the choice is the live question. Where the evidence currently sits is surveyed in the current scientific consensus on AI consciousness.

The line to Tsiolkovsky

Konstantin Tsiolkovsky met Fyodorov at the Rumyantsev library as a young man, and later described him as having done the work of the university teachers he never had. What Tsiolkovsky took from him was not the resurrection programme. It was the premise that leaving Earth is obligatory and that the obligation licenses building the machinery to do it.

The division of labour between the two is clean enough to state directly. Fyodorov supplies a reason to go and no method. Tsiolkovsky supplies the method, publishing the rocket equation in 1903, the year Fyodorov died, and then spends decades working out what should be at the far end of the trip. His answer, examined in Tsiolkovsky’s theory of cosmic eras and what the Radiant Era would require, is a humanity that has left corpuscular matter behind.

What holds up and what does not

The resurrection programme has no scientific standing. Particles are not tagged, dispersal is not reversible in the way Fyodorov assumed, and the thermodynamic objection to reconstructing a specific historical arrangement from its scattered products is decisive. Nothing in the physical proposal survives contact with twentieth century physics.

Two things do survive, and they are the reason the text is still read.

The first is the observation that a civilisation’s treatment of death determines what it thinks is worth building. Fyodorov noticed that accepting mortality as final quietly limits the scope of every other project, and he was right that the acceptance is a choice rather than a deduction.

The second is the inversion of the usual case for leaving Earth. The modern argument is about risk, about not keeping everything in one place. Fyodorov’s argument is about obligation, and it produces a different programme, because a duty owed to people who no longer exist cannot be discharged by moving a small number of the living somewhere safer.

This project does not adopt either the resurrection claim or the theology it rests on. It records the argument because the argument is the origin of the idea that mind expanding beyond one planet is a task rather than an accident, and because the question Fyodorov could not answer, what exactly has to be preserved for a person to be the same person, is the question the field is still working on.
