Project Hail Mary and what Rocky assumes about non-human consciousness

In Andy Weir’s 2021 hard science fiction novel Project Hail Mary (Ballantine Books, ISBN 978-0-593-13520-4), human astronaut Ryland Grace encounters an extraterrestrial intelligence in the Tau Ceti system: Rocky, an engineer from the planet 40 Eridani A.

Unlike traditional science fiction aliens that share humanoid sensory apparatuses and vocal anatomy, Rocky’s biology is xenobiologically distinct. Eridians evolved under a 29-atmosphere ammonia and carbon dioxide blanket in total darkness. Rocky possesses a five-legged carapace built of heavy silicate and metallic minerals, circulates mercury-rich blood, perceives his environment entirely through high-resolution active acoustic echolocation, and speaks by modulating chords across a multi-chambered vocal organ.

The narrative momentum of the novel rests on an engineering problem: can two minds that share zero biological ancestry, operate on disjoint physical substrates, and inhabit incompatible sensory worlds establish mutual understanding and save their respective civilizations from stellar extinction?

Beneath its orbital mechanics, Project Hail Mary is a dramatization of Thomas Nagel’s classic problem in the philosophy of mind: the subjective character of experience and the limits of cross-substrate translation.

Thomas Nagel’s Bat Problem in Deep Space

In his landmark 1974 paper “What Is It Like to Be a Bat?” (The Philosophical Review, DOI: 10.2307/2183914), philosopher Thomas Nagel argued that subjective phenomenal consciousness cannot be fully captured by objective, physicalist descriptions. An organism is conscious if and only if there is “something that it is like” to be that organism, an intrinsic, first-person point of view.

Nagel chose bats precisely because their primary sensory modality, echolocation, is fundamentally alien to human experience. A human neuroscientist can construct a complete physical description of a bat’s auditory cortex, cochlear hair cells, and ultrasonic chirp frequencies. Yet no amount of third-person physical data reveals what it feels like to perceive a moth via active acoustic sonar from the inside.

Project Hail Mary scales Nagel’s thought experiment to interstellar contact. The central philosophical triumph of Project Hail Mary is that despite having disjoint sensory Umwelten (the organism-specific subjective world described by biologist Jakob von Uexküll), Grace and Rocky achieve near-flawless functional cooperation and mutual theory of mind.

How can two minds with zero shared sensory qualia establish a shared reality?

The answer lies in functionalist emergentism and structural isomorphism:
