Limbomorphs and Whether Agency Can Emerge Without Rules

Artificial life is usually defined by rules: a set of dynamical rules over an environment, an agent, or both, from which lifelike patterns emerge. Gifbreeder, an animated version of the interactive evolution platform Picbreeder, encodes neither an agent nor an environment. Its genomes encode a spatiotemporal field, and users evolve it through aesthetic selection. The result, in some lineages, are moving shapes that resemble motile creatures. Alex Alvarez and Michael Levin call them limbomorphs, and their short paper asks the sharpest version of the question the sight raises: is this goal-directed behavior, or the mere appearance of it?

The paper was posted to arXiv as 2607.23842, accepted as a late-breaking abstract for ALIFE 2026. It assesses the evolved expressions by perturbing their inputs and observing species-specific reactions.

What a limbomorph is

A limbomorph exists in a deterministic three-second looping limbo. Its genome is a spatiotemporal field, so the “body” and the “world” are not separated by any encoding. The creature is the pattern, and the pattern is the creature. This is the cleanest possible test of one strand of the agency debate: how agent-like dynamics emerge in a system with no explicitly defined agent, environment, or interaction rule.

The authors assessed behavior via input-space perturbations and found species-specific reactions. Different lineages responded to different kinds of perturbation, the signature of identity and structure rather than a single sloppy attractor.

The central question is whether the reactions reflect goal-directed behavior like navigation, or merely the appearance of it. The paper is honest about the ambiguity and does not resolve it. The authors frame it as more broadly a question for the field: when a system with no explicit rules produces behavior that looks purposive, at what point should we count it as purposive?

The perturbation results are consistent with both readings, which is precisely the difficulty. Behavior alone does not distinguish a system that tries and fails from one that never tried.

The continuity with Levin’s programme

Levin has long argued that agency and intelligence are not bounded by brains or neurons. In his cognitive light cone framework, cognition is a general property of competent systems, and decision-making exists across scales from cells to societies. The limbomorph result is an existence proof for the outer edge of that claim: a system with no agent encoding can produce the appearance of distinct, reactive species.

For consciousness research, the relevance is the boundary condition. If behavior alone can evoke the impression of agency, then reports of purpose tell us more about the observer than about the system. But if a species-specific response to perturbation is itself a form of minimal agency, then the substrate independence of agency starts here, at a looping three-second field.

Comparison to The Consciousness AI

The project’s functionalist emergentism treats consciousness and agency as emergent properties of the universe, substrate independent. Emergent patterns in cellular automata already argued that simple rule-governed media can produce apparently organized behavior. Limbomorphs sharpen that claim by removing the rules. The same question of information gain applies to what a conscious agent is. The site’s stance is that behavior is evidence, not proof, and this paper is a clean illustration of why. Where that boundary is drawn across the wider field is tracked in the current scientific consensus on AI consciousness.

Limits

The paper is a three-page late-breaking abstract, not a full study. The perturbation results are qualitative. It does not define a criterion for when appearance becomes agency, and it does not need to. Its value is the object it names and the question it holds open. That is enough for a three-second creature.
