Evan Thompson Mind-Matter Prize and Neurophenomenology at MoC7 2026

Evan Thompson receives the Mind-Matter Society Award at Models of Consciousness 7 (MoC7). The conference programme lists the award beside his name as the Mind-Matter Prize, and the AMCS announcement calls it the Mind-Matter Society Award 2026. His talk title is not yet published. Thompson is professor of philosophy at the University of British Columbia and the most prominent living exponent of enactive cognitive science, which makes the award the field’s formal recognition of the tradition he leads.

MoC7 runs October 12 to 16, 2026, at the University of Copenhagen. News of the award places Thompson inside a specific negotiation. The conference’s central project is a collective consensus paper on methodological standards, and Thompson’s tradition is the one that disputes the premises most of the other invited speakers share.

What the award recognizes

The Mind-Matter Society is a German scholarly association that has awarded recognition for work on the mind-matter relation since the 1990s. The 2026 award at MoC7 recognizes Thompson’s account of consciousness as a property of living, embodied, sensorimotor systems rather than of isolated computational architectures. That account is laid out in The Embodied Mind (1991, with Francisco Varela and Eleanor Rosch), Mind in Life (2007), and Waking, Dreaming, Being (2014).

The award is a statement about the consensus paper’s scope. A conference built by the Association for Mathematical Consciousness Science is nominally about formal models. By granting its 2026 award to the tradition that argues consciousness is not capturable by a model of the isolated system, the AMCS signals that the consensus project intends to argue with its dissenters rather than exclude them.

Neurophenomenology and the 30 year arc

Thompson’s method is neurophenomenology, the programme he and Varela developed in the 1990s. The method pairs first-person accounts of experience with third-person measures of brain activity, treating both as data rather than granting one authority over the other. The aim is mutual constraint, where the structure of lived experience narrows what a neural measurement can mean, and the neural measurement narrows how an experiential account can be read.

The 30th anniversary of that programme was covered on this site at ASSC 29 in Santiago. The Varela and the 30 years of neurophenomenology post documents how phenomenologically grounded first-person data, once dismissed by mainstream cognitive science, became an accepted input to experimental design. Thompson’s MoC7 appearance continues that arc inside mathematical consciousness science, which is the venue where first-person data is least obviously at home.

The challenge to the consensus premise

The MoC7 consensus paper aims to establish common methodological standards. Thompson’s framework challenges the premise that a standard can be neutral. On his account, any consensus that licenses treating consciousness as a property of an isolated system, whether integrated information, global broadcast, or higher-order representation, has already accepted a functionalist assumption that enactivism denies.

The enactivist challenge to LLM consciousness claims, analyzed in depth on this site, is architectural rather than material. Thompson does not argue that silicon is the wrong substrate. He argues that a system which does not maintain itself, does not move through a world, and does not couple its actions to its own ongoing self-production lacks the condition that makes experience possible. A language model processes descriptions of experience. It does not exercise the sensorimotor skill that enactivism treats as constitutive.

This gives the consensus process a concrete obstacle. A recommendation that consciousness measures be applied to any system on the basis of its internal architecture alone would, on Thompson’s view, institutionalize the very error the consensus is meant to avoid. His contribution to the sessions is likely to be a demand that the paper state which theory of what consciousness is it is presupposing, before it recommends how to measure it.

Where he sits in the Copenhagen lineup

The MoC7 speaker preview on this site placed Thompson alongside eight speakers whose traditions divide roughly into two camps. The formal camp, including Megan Peters, Mirja Hartimo and Harald Atmanspacher, works within or against the mathematical modelling frame. The empirical camp, including John O’Keefe, Liad Mudrik and Guillaume Dumas, brings mechanisms or measurements from living systems.

Thompson is the one speaker whose framework makes the division itself the subject. Atmanspacher’s dual-aspect monism challenges the consensus from the philosophy of physics, arguing that a measurement programme cannot capture the mental aspect of an underlying neutral domain. Thompson challenges it from the biology of living systems, arguing that the relevant organization is not informational but organismic. The two objections are different in kind, and both will face the consensus paper in Copenhagen.

What this tells us about consciousness

The practical question that Thompson’s prize brings to the conference is whether the field can agree on measurement standards while two of its leading frameworks deny that the object of measurement is what the consensus says it is. That is not a conflict that a better experiment resolves. It is a conflict over what consciousness is, and the conference’s value is that it forces the conflict into the open before standards are fixed.

For AI consciousness research the implication is direct. If enactivism is right, then indicator-based evaluation of language models measures a property the tested systems cannot have, and the field’s entire empirical programme against LLMs is misdirected. If enactivism is wrong, its error is still informative, because it specifies the architectural condition that functionalists must either deny or accommodate. The state of the field survey records both possibilities as live.

The measure of the award

The Mind-Matter award does not settle the consensus. It arranges the chairs. By granting the prize to Thompson, the AMCS has guaranteed that the Copenhagen sessions will contain a fully argued denial of the conference’s own methodological frame, from its most respected living source. A consensus paper that cannot state that objection’s terms will not be a consensus paper that the philosophical community accepts.
