Benjamin G. Farrar co-authored Testing two competing hypotheses for Eurasian jays’ caching for the future with Piero Amodio, Johanni Brea, Ljerka Ostojić and Nicola S. Clayton. The paper appeared in Scientific Reports on 12 January 2021. It lists Farrar at the University of Cambridge’s Department of Psychology and the Institute for Globally Distributed Open Research and Education, or IGDORE. These are publication-time affiliations.
The contribution statement credits Farrar, Amodio and Ostojić with collecting Experiment 1 data. Farrar participated in discussions about study design and commented on subsequent manuscript drafts. It credits Brea with data analysis. This account does not support assigning the formal modelling work to Farrar alone.
The study found that a model with equal caching rates across locations best explained the final-test data in both experiments. The authors also discuss task demands, limited experience and sensitivity to smaller effects. Those limits constrain the inference about planning. They do not license a conclusion about the absence of conscious experience, or establish that Farrar regards biology as its exclusive possible substrate.
