Builder The claim is about what the hardware does, and the philosophy is left open

Hefei Liu is the first author of two works this site tracks in the device-physics line. In Nano Letters on April 9, 2021, he and colleagues published A Tantalum Disulfide Charge-Density-Wave Stochastic Artificial Neuron for Emulating Neural Statistical Properties, a phase-transition device whose threshold switching produces stochastic firing with the statistical properties of neural activity. On March 9, 2023, he first-authored Artificial Neuronal Devices Based on Emerging Materials: Neuronal Dynamics and Applications in Advanced Materials, the review that organized the field’s device concepts, switching physics and structures into one map.

The review’s abstract names the motivation this site shares an interest in. Artificial neuronal devices are critical building blocks of neuromorphic computing systems, driven by new computing technology and by the goal of more realistic brain emulation.

This site’s Builder category refers to his authorship of both works, covered in the memristive neurons analysis and the device physics analysis. They concern neuronal dynamics in hardware and make no claim about consciousness.

Known for. First author of the tantalum disulfide stochastic artificial neuron and the 2023 Advanced Materials neuronal devices review
