Patricia Smith Churchland is UC President’s Professor of Philosophy Emerita at the University of California, San Diego, and an adjunct professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. She is widely recognized as the founder of “neurophilosophy,” integrating empirical findings from neuroscience with foundational questions in the philosophy of mind.

In her landmark book Neurophilosophy, Toward a Unified Science of the Mind-Brain (MIT Press, 1986) and subsequent works including Braintrust (2011) and Touching a Nerve (2013), Churchland defended Eliminative Materialism. She argues that traditional folk-psychological concepts (such as pure qualia, Cartesian subjects, and ungrounded intentional beliefs) are flawed theoretical constructs that will be revised and superseded as neuroscience discovers the actual biological control architectures of the mammalian nervous system.

Churchland’s materialist perspective provides a rigorous empirical constraint for AI evaluations. Cognitive and conscious capabilities cannot be evaluated by linguistic anthropomorphism, but through measurable neurocomputational mechanisms of survival, learning, and self-preservation.
