Rin Kuriyama

Builder The claim is about what the hardware does, and the philosophy is left open

Rin Kuriyama is the first author of Microscopic-Level Mouse Whole Cortex Simulation Composed of 9 Million Biophysical Neurons and 26 Billion Synapses on the Supercomputer Fugaku, published in the proceedings of SC ‘25, the ACM supercomputing conference, on November 15, 2025, with Tadashi Yamazaki as senior author and Anton Arkhipov among the coauthors (DOI 10.1145/3712285.3759819).

The paper reports a lightweight biophysical neuron simulator optimized for Fugaku, a strong-scaling benchmark up to 152,064 compute nodes sustaining 7.13 petaflops, and the realistic target, a whole mouse cerebral cortex with 9 million biophysical neurons connected by 26 billion synapses. The detail tier is the point. Biophysical models carry membrane and channel dynamics that point-neuron simulations discard.

This site’s Builder category refers to the authorship of that simulator and result, covered in the Fugaku mouse cortex analysis. It is a feasibility record for whole brain emulation and makes no claim about consciousness.
