Feng Guo is a bioengineer and associate professor in the Department of Intelligent Systems Engineering at Indiana University Bloomington. His laboratory builds biological computing systems from cultured neural tissue.

Guo led the team behind Brainoware, published in Nature Electronics in December 2023, which used a brain organoid on a high-density multielectrode array as a reservoir computer. The system performed speech recognition and predicted the output of a nonlinear equation, adapting its functional connectivity through use.

His work sits at the boundary the site tracks between biological tissue and computing substrate. A lump of cultured neurons that computes adaptively is evidence for how far the substrate term reaches, and Guo keeps his own claims well below any assertion about experience, describing adaptive computation rather than consciousness.
