Builder The claim is about what the hardware does, and the philosophy is left open

Guoyu Lu is an associate professor at the University of Georgia directing the Intelligent Vision and Sensing Laboratory. His research spans 3D perception, autonomous navigation, and biologically grounded embodied control for legged and mobile robots.

In September 2026, Lu and his colleagues Jinchang Zhang and Zijian Lin released “FlyCNS: Connectome-Grounded Dynamic Sparse Communication for Embodied Control” (arXiv:2609.28816). Instead of running an entire synaptic connectome as a slow simulator, FlyCNS extracts the macro-scale directional communication structure of the adult Drosophila brain-and-nerve-cord connectome, specifically the effective-rank ratio of ascending sensory pathways ($3 \times 16$) to descending motor pathways ($16 \times 3$), and embeds that biological asymmetry as a Lagrangian structural prior inside the NeuroRoute controller for a Unitree Go1 quadruped.

Lu’s profile is Builder. FlyCNS demonstrates a practical engineering bridge for whole-brain connectomics, showing that connectome topology can constrain real-time embodied bandwidth allocation and cut inter-module communication by nearly four-fifths while preserving locomotion tracking within 6.1 percent of full-bandwidth control.
