Builder The claim is about what the hardware does, and the philosophy is left open

Jen-Sue Chen is the senior author of Achieving neuronal dynamics with spike encoding and spatial-temporal summation in vanadium-based threshold switching memristor for asynchronous signal integration, published in Nanoscale Horizons, published online December 11, 2024, with Pei-Lin Lin as first author (DOI 10.1039/d4nh00484a). The device carries spike encoding and spatial-temporal summation, the operations a biological synapse-and-soma system performs, in a single vanadium-oxide memristor, which the authors present as a prospect for the hardware realization of spiking neural networks.

The result is the step the hardware line this site tracks has been waiting on, because integration is the hard part. Producing spikes in hardware had been demonstrated; performing the temporal and spatial summation that makes spikes computationally useful, asynchronously and in the same material, is the step this paper reports.

This site’s Builder category refers to her group’s authorship of that work, covered in the device physics analysis. It makes no claim about consciousness.
