John O'Keefe
John O’Keefe FMedSci FRS is Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at University College London and the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre. He was awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (jointly with May-Britt Moser and Edvard Moser) for discovering the cells that constitute an internal positioning system in the brain.
In 1971, O’Keefe discovered “place cells” in the hippocampus, neurons that fire selectively when an organism occupies a specific physical location in an environment. In his seminal book The Hippocampus as a Cognitive Map (Oxford University Press, 1978, with Lynn Nadel), O’Keefe proposed that the hippocampus builds an allocentric geometric coordinate system that grounds spatial memory, orientation, and episodic consciousness.
O’Keefe’s mechanistic insights into spatial representation and theta phase precession demonstrate that conscious episodic memory and self-location require an internal metric space, establishing a fundamental biological model for spatial AI navigation and cognitive architectures.
