Lauren Ross PhD is an associate professor of philosophy of science at the University of California, Irvine. She earned her PhD in history and philosophy of science from the University of Pittsburgh and has held research positions at the University of Chicago and the London School of Economics.
Ross studies causation and explanation in neuroscience, examining how experimental measures are justified and what they actually reveal about brain mechanisms. Her metascientific approach is directly relevant to consciousness research, where the gap between operational measures perceptual awareness, metacognitive reports, neural correlates and the target phenomenon of conscious experience itself remains the field’s deepest methodological challenge.
She was a keynote speaker at Models of Consciousness 7 (MoC7) in Copenhagen, where she analyzed whether current consciousness tests carry the causal and explanatory warrant that researchers claim for them.
