Adam B. Barrett

Adam B. Barrett is Reader in Data Science and Complex Systems at the University of Sussex, based in the Department of Informatics and the Sussex Centre for Consciousness Science. His research focuses on developing rigorous mathematical and statistical tools to measure integrated information, complexity, and consciousness in neural and physical systems.

In landmark publications including his 2026 paper on “Integrated Information Theory, Continuous Field Formulation,” Barrett addressed a core theoretical limitation of standard discrete IIT, specifically how to evaluate cause-effect power in continuous, spatially distributed physical media. Barrett formulated measure-theoretic definitions of Phi that preserve axiomatic integration while resolving classical discrete partition paradoxes and edge cases.

Barrett’s mathematical formalizations provide the foundational bridge needed to apply integrated information metrics to analog neuromorphic architectures, quantum systems, and large-scale continuous field computations.
