Biological naturalist Consciousness requires living metabolic hardware
František Baluška is a cell biologist at the IZMB, University of Bonn, and a leading figure in the cellular consciousness program alongside Arthur Reber and William B. Miller Jr. His work gives the Cellular Basis of Consciousness its mechanistic content. With Reber and Miller he has argued in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences that sentience lives in subcellular signaling microdomains the 2021 paper calls nanobrains, actin-based structures whose information processing is fast enough to support a cell’s sensorimotor decisions (DOI 10.3390/ijms22052545, PMID 33802617), and in the Journal of Physiology that the sentient cell is the basic unit of tissues, organs, and organismal physiology (DOI 10.1113/JP284419, PMID 37847422).
Baluška is also the founder of plant neurobiology as a research program, extending the same framework to plants, whose root apices he treats as brain-like information-processing units. The program is contested, and its claims are large, but its experimental program is real.
This site covers the cellular consciousness camp in the CBC and AI consciousness analysis, where the program’s sharpest consequence is examined. If every living cell is sentient, then consciousness is a property of living matter as such, and artificial systems are excluded by construction. Baluška’s mechanisms are what make that claim biological rather than merely philosophical.
