Tristan A. Bekinschtein
Tristan A. Bekinschtein is Associate Professor in Cognitive Neuroscience and Director of the Consciousness and Cognition Lab at the Department of Psychology, University of Cambridge. His research investigates the neural mechanisms underlying transitions between conscious awareness and unconscious states across clinical disorders of consciousness, anesthesia, and natural sleep.
Bekinschtein co-developed the landmark “local-global” auditory oddball paradigm alongside Stanislas Dehaene and Lionel Naccache, establishing that while early sensory local violations can be processed unconsciously, global violation detection across extended temporal windows serves as a reliable clinical biomarker of conscious access. His laboratory utilizes electrophysiology, information theory, and behavioral testing to chart how cognitive networks disintegrate during sedation.
Bekinschtein’s empirical biomarker paradigms provide critical benchmarks for evaluating synthetic systems, distinguishing between localized unconscious automated processing and system-wide integrated conscious monitoring.
