Geoffrey Lee
New York University
Geoffrey Lee’s research addresses the foundational questions about perception and consciousness, what it is for experience to present the world, and what distinguishes genuine consciousness from its functional duplicates. That second question is the one he carries into the AI debate. His chapter “AI Consciousness, Pluralism, and Anthropocentrism” in the Journal of Consciousness Studies 2026 special issue argues that the dominant frameworks for AI consciousness research are covertly anthropocentric, defining consciousness through features prominent in human experience and then grading systems against those features, which both underestimates systems whose experience differs from human experience and overestimates the theoretical necessity of features prominent in humans.
In 2026 he co-edited, with Adam Pautz, the Oxford University Press volume The Importance of Being Conscious, a 406-page collection on the moral and epistemic significance of consciousness that names near-future AI among the cases the significance question has to cover. Lee contributes his own chapter, “Consciousness, Pseudo-Consciousness, and the Moral Significance of Consciousness”, which engages the distinction between systems in which experience does the moral work and systems that merely appear to instantiate it, the exact distinction AI consciousness assessment has to operationalize. He is also at work on a book about locating consciousness in a material world, The Search for the Inner Light.
Lee does not carry a single position label on this site. His AI-relevant stance is methodological pluralism, a caution against grading non-human candidates with human-calibrated instruments, which connects his chapter work to the cross-substrate inference problem this site tracks from neurophysiology.
