Jon M. Mallatt

Jon M. Mallatt is an evolutionary morphologist who supplies the comparative anatomy that the Cambrian origins account rests on. Where Todd E. Feinberg brings the clinical neurology, Mallatt brings the phylogeny, the fossils and the willingness to say which animals are excluded. Their joint work argues that primary consciousness appeared between about 560 and 520 million years ago, independently, in vertebrates, arthropods and cephalopod molluscs.

The exclusions are the part that makes the claim testable. Protochordates are ruled out, and they are our own closest invertebrate relatives. Cnidarians are ruled out despite having neurons, because a nerve net conducts without integrating. Nematodes are ruled out despite a completely mapped connectome. Most molluscs are ruled out while one branch of the same phylum is not. The line is drawn by neural organisation rather than by ancestry, which is what stops the account from being a restatement of how closely an animal resembles us.

Mallatt has taken the argument further than Feinberg toward its consequences for machines. His 2025 review of sensory indicators in Animal Cognition (DOI 10.1007/s10071-024-01907-z) treats sentience as an evolved biological specialisation that requires living physiological structure, homeostatic regulation and subcortical isomorphic mapping, and concludes that a computational system reproducing the functional organisation would be a simulation rather than a realisation. That is a direct denial of the substrate independence assumed by functionalist emergentism, and it is the strongest empirically grounded version of that denial currently in print.
