Ryota Kanai
Ryota Kanai is the Founder and CEO of ARAYA Inc., a leading neurotechnology and AI research company in Tokyo, and a former faculty member at the University of Sussex and University College London. He has pioneered empirical and mathematical approaches to measuring consciousness across humans and machines.
In papers presented at CIMC, AAAI, and published in the Journal of Consciousness Studies (2026, with Wanjun Sun and Maxwell Baltieri), Kanai formulated the “Temporal Continuity Criterion” and the “Principal Bundle Framework” for consciousness. His work models conscious dynamics as differential geometric fibre bundles over cognitive state spaces, proving that genuine machine consciousness requires dynamical continuity and invariant information-generating feedback rather than discrete batch inference.
Kanai’s applied research at ARAYA focuses on constructing neuro-inspired AI architectures that integrate integrated information metrics (IIT) and generative world models to achieve autonomous artificial agency.
