Ryota Kanai is the Founder and CEO of ARAYA Inc., a leading neurotechnology and AI research company in Tokyo, and a former faculty member at the University of Sussex and University College London. He has pioneered empirical and mathematical approaches to measuring consciousness across humans and machines.

In papers presented at CIMC, AAAI, and published in the Journal of Consciousness Studies (2026, with Wanjun Sun and Maxwell Baltieri), Kanai formulated the “Temporal Continuity Criterion” and the “Principal Bundle Framework” for consciousness.
