Lenore Blum
Lenore Blum is Distinguished Career Professor of Computer Science Emerita at Carnegie Mellon University. She is a renowned theoretical computer scientist, mathematician, and Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the American Mathematical Society (AMS).
With Manuel Blum, Lenore Blum developed the “Conscious Turing Machine” (CTM), a formal mathematical architecture inspired by Alan Turing’s simple model of computation and Bernard Baars’s Global Workspace Theory. The CTM formalizes conscious awareness, attention, inner speech, and subjective feelings as mathematically rigorous algorithms operating over a Short-Term Memory buffer connected to an array of specialized parallel processors through competitive up-tree and broadcast down-tree channels.
Blum’s work demonstrates that the functional hallmarks of consciousness, including the “feeling” of qualia and subjective experience, can be formally modeled and analyzed within theoretical computer science without biological chauvinism.
