Alysson R. Muotri
Alysson R. Muotri is Professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Cellular & Molecular Medicine and Director of the Stem Cell Program at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. He is a world leader in neural stem cell biology, human neurodevelopment, and cortical organoid technology.
Muotri’s laboratory achieved international renown by demonstrating that human pluripotent stem cell-derived brain organoids (“mini-brains”) can self-assemble into functional 3D cortical networks exhibiting synchronized, phase-amplitude coupled oscillatory electrical activity. Over months of maturation, these organoids produce nested neural oscillations resembling electroencephalogram (EEG) patterns recorded in preterm human infants, raising unprecedented scientific and ethical questions regarding sentience in synthetic biological substrates.
Muotri’s empirical models provide a direct experimental platform to test whether self-organizing biological neural tissue requires embodied environmental interaction to transition from raw oscillatory complexity to genuine conscious perception.
