Adam Safron

Adam Safron is a cognitive neuroscientist, research fellow, and data scientist affiliated with the Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Indiana University Bloomington. His work bridges machine learning, active inference, computational neuroscience, and the philosophy of mind.

Safron formulated Integrated World Modeling Theory (IWMT), a unified synthetic framework that unifies Karl Friston’s Free Energy Principle and Active Inference with Bernard Baars’s Global Workspace Theory and Giulio Tononi’s Integrated Information Theory. IWMT proposes that consciousness is the computational process whereby a generative world model integrates spatial, temporal, and somatic representations to minimize variational free energy and predict action-perception outcomes.

Safron’s framework serves as a direct architectural roadmap for building conscious AI systems, detailing how hierarchical predictive coding, attentional gating, and embodied generative self-models converge into functional artificial agency.
