Scott L. Brincat

Scott L. Brincat is a Research Scientist in the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research investigates how populations of neurons in the primate brain represent, maintain, and manipulate information during complex cognitive tasks.

Working alongside Earl K. Miller, Brincat has conducted extensive electrophysiological investigations into laminar cortical dynamics, exploring how feedback from deep layers interacts with feedforward sensory signals in superficial layers. His work has provided key empirical evidence that oscillatory rhythms structure cortical communication by coordinating precise spike timing across distributed circuits.

In “Analog Cognition and Consciousness” (2026, Journal of Neuroscience), Brincat co-developed the theoretical architecture showing how traveling electrical waves route information across the prefrontal cortex. This work highlights how continuous wave propagation and local field potentials carry functional computational weight, modulating neural excitability and enabling flexible cognitive control.
