Biological naturalist Consciousness requires living metabolic hardware
Paco Calvo directs the Minimal Intelligence Laboratory (MINT Lab) at the University of Murcia and is the leading philosopher of plant cognition. His 2016 Synthese manifesto, “The philosophy of plant neurobiology” (PMID 33081970), laid out the program, examined on this site in the plant cognition analysis, and his experimental work with Stefano Mancuso on learning in pea seedlings demonstrated associative learning in organisms without nervous systems. His 2022 book Planta Sapiens, The New Science of Plant Intelligence (with Natalie Lawrence) brought the argument to a general audience.
The framework’s claim is that cognition, the flexible, goal-directed adjustment of behavior to a changing environment, does not require neurons. Plants anticipate, decide, and learn through biochemical and bioelectric signaling, which makes them the maximal test case for the site’s life-agnostic coverage. If minimal consciousness extends to plants, the boundary between cognitive and non-cognitive systems falls well below the brain, and every theory calibrated to neural machinery needs a substrate-independent restatement, the project this site’s basal cognition profiles document.
For artificial consciousness, Calvo’s program supplies both a warning and an opening. The warning is that intelligence tests built around animal behavior may miss non-neural minds. The opening is that the same functional criteria, applied without neural bias, are exactly what a substrate-independent assessment needs.
