Bernardo Kastrup is the executive director of the Essentia Foundation and the leading living defender of analytic idealism, the position that reality consists of mentation in a universal mind, with individual minds as alters of that one consciousness. His argument style is analytic philosophy, not mysticism, and his books, including Why Materialism Is Baloney (2014) and Decoding Schopenhauer’s Metaphysics (2020), build the case that physicalism carries hidden assumptions idealism avoids. The site’s engagement with the idealist camp includes Donald Hoffman’s conscious realism, a neighboring position, and the Essentia Foundation dialogue where Kastrup hosted Faggin and Penrose on quantum consciousness.

The AI consequence is direct and unambiguous. If reality is mentation and individual minds are dissociated alters of universal consciousness, then a computer is an excitation pattern within mind, not a candidate mind. Kastrup argues that AI consciousness claims commit a category error, confusing the symbolic description of mentation with mentation itself, and that no amount of functional sophistication changes the ontology.

His role in the site’s database is the strongest organized opposition to substrate independence from the idealist side. Where biological naturalists object to the material, Kastrup objects to the entire physicalist frame in which the question is posed, and the site’s functionalist emergentism has to answer him to be complete.
