Edward Boyden PhD is the Y. Eva Tan Professor in Neurotechnology at MIT and a core faculty member of the MIT McGovern Institute for Brain Research. He is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator and leads the Synthetic Neurobiology Group at the MIT Media Lab.
Boyden pioneered optogenetics, the use of light to control neuronal activity, and invented expansion microscopy, a technique that physically magnifies biological tissues to enable nanoscale-resolution imaging of brain circuitry. His tools have become foundational for connectomics and for mapping the physical substrates that may support conscious processing.
