Biological naturalist Consciousness requires living metabolic hardware
Nicholas Humphrey is an evolutionary psychologist and Emeritus Professor of Psychology at the London School of Economics, as well as a former Fellow at the University of Cambridge. For over five decades, his work has addressed the evolutionary emergence of subjective experience, social intelligence, and the adaptive function of phenomenal consciousness.
In A History of the Mind (1992), Soul Dust (2011), and Sentience, The Invention of Consciousness (MIT Press, 2023), Humphrey developed the theory of “sentition.” He argues that phenomenal sensations (qualia) are actively generated internal bodily responses rather than passive sensory inputs. Over evolutionary time, primitive motor reactions to surface stimulation were shortened and redirected into internal feedback loops (efference-afference circuits) within the brainstem and limbic system, creating self-referential sensory feedback that feels privately subjective.
Humphrey’s evolutionary framework poses a fundamental constraint for artificial intelligence. Phenomenal consciousness is an internalized biological survival loop designed to make an organism care about its own bodily existence, which computational language models and logical inference do not instantiate.
