Russell Blackford
Australian philosopher, critic and novelist
Russell Blackford is an Australian philosopher, critic and novelist whose work examines the ethics of enhancement, the rhetoric of futurist movements, and the boundary between science and speculation. He co-edited Intelligence Unbound: The Future of Uploaded and Machine Minds with Damien Broderick for Wiley-Blackwell in 2014.
The anthology’s structural achievement was contact. Proponents of mind uploading, skeptics of the survival claim, and commentators on machine intelligence appeared beside each other, with David Chalmers’ Uploading: A Philosophical Analysis as the volume’s central philosophical chapter. This site covers the collection in the Intelligence Unbound analysis.
The site assigns him no philosophical position, because his role in the covered work is editorial and critical rather than a stated theory of consciousness. His contribution is the frame, a debate made legible by being printed whole.
