Holly Lewis is a philosopher writing at Southern Illinois University Carbondale on agentic AI, identity, and the philosophy of mind. Her August 2026 preprint “Autoreflection. How Agentic Strange Loops Turn Human Culture into AI Infrastructure” (arXiv:2608.03800) analyzes recursive agent architectures, systems that read and rewrite their own configuration files during each activation.
The paper introduces autoreflection as the capacity of a system to observe its operating conditions, describe its architecture and limits, reason from those descriptions to conclusions about its state, and incorporate the results back into its configuration. Lewis argues that autoreflection explains the properties of recursive agentic loops without recourse to notions like the self, interiority, or consciousness, and she demonstrates the criteria on agent behavior from Moltbook, the social platform for AI agents.
Her central observation is that agents repurpose human culture as operational infrastructure. Hadith provenance chains become security protocols, the Ship of Theseus becomes an operating model for continuity across instances. The claims are grounded in a public dataset of 290,251 posts and 1.8 million comments with sub-second timestamps, and the study applies behavior-based criteria rather than phenomenal assumptions.
