Jobst Landgrebe

AI systems entrepreneur and philosopher

Critic Current evidence and current methods do not support the claims being made

Jobst Landgrebe is a German philosopher and AI systems entrepreneur. With Barry Smith he wrote Why Machines Will Never Rule the World (Routledge, 2022), which argues that human language and cognition are products of complex adaptive systems whose behavior cannot be captured by the mathematical models machine learning uses, and that machine general intelligence therefore never arrives.

For the mind uploading debate the decisive chapter is Digital Immortality, which treats the preserved-person promise as resting on the failed premise. If machines cannot reproduce general intelligence, a scanned mind running on a machine is a simulation of one output stream rather than a continuation of the person. This site covers the argument in the digital immortality under German scrutiny analysis.

His position on this site’s scale is Critic, source-backed by the book’s own thesis. The site’s substrate independence claim must answer his complexity argument directly, and the book states precisely where the burden sits.
