Kelvin J. McQueen

Kelvin J. McQueen is Associate Professor of Philosophy and an affiliated faculty member at the Institute for Quantum Studies at Chapman University. His research specializes in the philosophy of quantum mechanics, the philosophy of mind, and the ontology of consciousness.

Collaborating with philosophers and physicists including David Chalmers, McQueen developed mathematically rigorous collapse models linking quantum mechanics with Integrated Information Theory (IIT). In papers such as “Consciousness and the Collapse of the Wave Function,” McQueen proposed modifying dynamical reduction theories (such as Continuous Spontaneous Localization, CSL) so that quantum superpositions collapse when a system’s integrated information (Phi) exceeds a critical physical threshold.

McQueen’s framework transforms the relationship between mind and matter into an empirically testable hypothesis, providing concrete predictions for quantum computing architectures and the physical conditions required for conscious observers.
