Biological naturalist Consciousness requires living metabolic hardware

Pamela Lyon is an independent researcher affiliated with the Southgate Institute for Health, Society and Equity at Flinders University, and the theorist who named the biogenic approach to cognition. Where most philosophy of mind starts from human cognition and works down, Lyon’s principle, developed in papers and the 2015 book The Biogenic Approach to Cognition with Michael Levin among others, is to start from biology and work up. Cognition, on this view, is the adaptive behavior of living organisms, and its roots reach to the bacterial strategies that manage stress, valence, and self-maintenance long before nervous systems exist.

Her 2021 Philosophical Transactions paper with Fred Keijzer, Detlev Arendt, and Michael Levin, “Reframing cognition, getting down to biological basics” (DOI 10.1098/rstb.2019.0750, PMID 33487107), opened the basal cognition special issue and supplied the field’s map, examined on this site in the Levin bioelectric cognition analysis. Her Stress-Induced Senescence theory grounds valence, the felt better-or-worse that many theories treat as the core of experience, in cellular stress dynamics.

The significance for artificial consciousness is a boundary condition. The biogenic approach ties cognition to life, which makes it a near neighbor of the cellular consciousness camp this site debates, while leaving open whether the functions it identifies can be instantiated elsewhere.
