Functionalist What matters is the organisation of the processing, not the material

Qiufang Fu is a researcher at the Institute of Psychology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, with an appointment history that also includes the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and the State Key Laboratory of Brain and Cognitive Science. Her published work concentrates on visual attention and perceptual learning, the experimental study of how observers select among competing perceptual representations and how training changes what perception can extract.

In the consciousness field she is co-chair, with Sheng He, of the local organizing committee for ASSC 30, the thirtieth annual meeting of the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness, to be held at the Beijing International Convention Center June 16-19, 2027. The meeting marks the society’s first gathering in China, and the CAS institutes the two co-chairs lead are where much of the country’s consciousness and perception research is housed.

Her relevance to consciousness science runs through the attention-awareness relationship her experiments probe. Selective attention and awareness dissociate in measurable ways, and the attention-selection line of work she belongs to supplies the behavioral constraints any theory of emerging consciousness must respect when it claims a system selects some contents for further processing while others run unselected.
