Ron Chrisley

Ron Chrisley is Professor of Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Sussex and one of the few academics whose job description has included machine consciousness since the field’s first wave. His work spans virtual machine functionalism in practice, the claim he developed with Aaron Sloman that experience-relevant organization is a virtual machine architecture, and constructive projects on grounded, enactive architectures where the candidate substrate of experience is the interaction between an agent’s control loops and its environment rather than a detached representation layer.

Chrisley’s position defends two commitments at once. First, that consciousness talk belongs in AI as an architectural specification, not as a report about behavior, which aligns him with the theory-heavy assessment method this site tracks in the nineteen researcher checklist. Second, that the architecture must be embodied and ecologically grounded, so that the states a machine manipulates carry content through sensorimotor dependence rather than through symbol conventions alone.
