Biological naturalist Consciousness requires living metabolic hardware

Simona Ginsburg is a neurobiologist and evolutionary theorist at The Open University of Israel, and with Eva Jablonka she built the framework that turned the origins-of-consciousness question from a search for a moment into a search for a capacity. Their Unlimited Associative Learning (UAL) marker holds that an organism able to form compound, supramodal representations and to learn new patterns from learned patterns in open-ended combination is minimally conscious by hypothesis. The 2010 paper with Jablonka placed that transition in the Cambrian explosion, and the 2016 paper with Zohar Bronfman defined minimal consciousness precisely, work examined on this site in the UAL analysis.

The framework’s methodological contribution is as important as its historical one. Because UAL is defined functionally, it generates predictions, which phyla qualify, which do not, and what evidence would move an organism across the threshold. The 2020 primer with Jonathan Birch states those predictions explicitly, and the 2025 Philosophical Transactions paper extends the account to consciousness as a new category of selection. Ginsburg and Jablonka’s 2019 MIT Press book, The Evolution of the Sensitive Soul, remains the full statement of the theory.

For the site’s subject matter, Ginsburg’s framework is the origins-side argument for functionalism. The marker does not care what a system is made of, only what it can do, which makes UAL one of the few consciousness criteria in the literature with a straightforward, if unoperationalized, extension to artificial systems.
