Functionalist What matters is the organisation of the processing, not the material

Stan Franklin, emeritus at the University of Memphis, built the bridge between global workspace theory and working software. His IDA agent, developed for the United States Navy, was one of the first autonomous software agents whose architecture was explicitly a computational implementation of Bernard Baars’s global workspace theory, and its successor, the LIDA cognitive architecture, remains the reference implementation of computational GWT. Franklin and Baars co-authored the papers that spelled out the mapping, making Franklin the engineer half of the workspace program this site covers in the Baars global workspace analysis.

LIDA decomposes cognition into recurring cycles of perception, understanding, and action selection, with a globally broadcast workspace at the center, and it has been used to model phenomena from choice blindness to apparent forms of deliberation. The architecture’s longevity is the point. Machine consciousness proposals are frequently theoretical; LIDA has run, been extended, and been critiqued for over two decades, which gives the workspace approach to artificial minds its longest empirical track record.

The position Franklin’s work defends is that consciousness-relevant function can be built, inspected, and improved as software. That is the engineering claim the site’s indicator discipline presupposes, and Franklin’s architecture is where it was first taken seriously.
