Illusionist Phenomenal consciousness as usually described does not exist
Position on AI consciousness
Dennett's theory permits artificial consciousness, since on his account organisation is all there is. His practical position was that building systems designed to present as people is reckless, because human judgement about which things have minds fails in the direction that causes harm.
Daniel Dennett spent forty years arguing that the question people think they are asking about consciousness is malformed. His target was the Cartesian Theater, the implicit assumption that somewhere past the processing there is a place where it all comes together and gets presented. His objection was not that the place is hard to find. It was that positing one leaves you owing an account of who is watching, which is the original problem again.
The Multiple Drafts Model replaces it with parallel processes that continuously revise each other and no master copy. Heterophenomenology supplies the method: take a subject’s reports as accurate data about what they believe, and treat whether the belief is accurate about an inner state as a separate question the report cannot settle. Applied to a language model producing first person reports, that discipline is immediately useful and rarely applied.
He died on 19 April 2024. The tension he left is unresolved and worth stating plainly. His theory permits artificial consciousness, since organisation is all there is.
