Functionalist What matters is the organisation of the processing, not the material

Murray Shanahan is Professor of Cognitive Robotics at Imperial College London, with a career that runs from logicist AI through embodied cognition to the consciousness science now applied to large language models. His book Embodiment and the Inner Life, Cognition and Consciousness in the Space of All Possible Minds (Oxford University Press, 2012) sets out a global-workspace-style architecture for machine minds in which consciousness-relevant processing is a function of organized access among specialized subsystems rather than of any particular substrate.

Shanahan is a co-author of the Butlin and Long indicator-properties report, the site’s nineteen researcher checklist, which assesses AI systems against architectural conditions drawn from scientific theories of consciousness, and he participated in the workshops that shaped it. His more recent work connects the assessment agenda to deployed systems directly, including the DeepMind introspection research he co-authored, which tests whether LLM self-reports track internal states.

The position his work defends is architectural functionalism with discipline. Consciousness talk about machines is premature until the architectures are specified, and the right specification language is the one consciousness science already uses. That stance makes him one of the bridge figures between the theory literature and the systems the site evaluates.
